Urgent: call today to expand the capital plan and eliminate school overcrowding!!

June 22, 2015

Dear Friends,

1. The city budget along with the school capital plan will likely be finalized this week and perhaps in a few days.

Please make calls TODAY to: Speaker Melissa Viverito: 212-788-7210 or 212-828-9800 and CM Julissa Ferreras, Finance chair: 718-651-1917 or 212-788-6862. Say NYC kids need an expanded school capital plan with double the seats, and a Commission to improve school planning and siting.

2. We have videos and summary of last week’s press conference on this issue; thanks to CM Danny Dromm, Stephen Levin, David Greenfield, Mark Levine and Inez Barron, as well as many parent leaders who spoke eloquently about the need to address school overcrowding and reform the planning process. CMs Levin and Greenfield pointed out that schools must be built along with new residential development — and not years later, as in our current dysfunctional process. See also the Public Advocate’s letter to the Mayor and Chancellor, co-signed by 22 Councilmembers, and the DNA info article about the need to double the seats in the capital plan.
But PLEASE make these calls today!
Thanks for your support,

Leonie Haimson
Executive Director
