Reminder! Hearings on school planning & updates on lead & immigrant students

February 26, 2017

I hope you and your family had a nice winter break. This Tuesday, the City Council will hold hearings on the need to improve school planning and siting process.

When: Tues. Feb. 28 starting at 10 AM

Where: Council Chambers, City Hall

What: City Council joint hearings of the Education and Finance committees on the school siting and planning process

As you’re probably aware, the current process for school siting and planning is dysfunctional and unless revamped will subject NYC students to even more overcrowding in the years to come.

Please come on Tuesday to testify about the overcrowding problem at your school, its impact on your children’s education and if you can, provide ideas for how to improve the process. The Council is launching an internal working group to analyze and propose solutions and these hearings will kick-off its deliberations. Public testimony starts at about 1 PM. If you can’t attend, you can also submit written testimony to City Council by emailing it to jatwell@council.nyc.gov.

2. You might also like to check out the recent updates on my blog related to DOE’s inadequate response to the lead in school water and the safety of immigrant students. Along with NYS Allies for Public Education, we have also proposed to NYSED and the Regents how the state accountability system should be designed to avoid counting opt out students as failing for the purpose of rating schools.

Hope to see you Tuesday,
