Report on capital plan hearings and school overcrowding

March 9, 2016

Dear Friend,

Yesterday the City Council Education Committee held hearings on the still underfunded DOE capital plan for school construction and repair.

Check out our blog here for our testimony and DOE responses to Council Members’ probing questions; here is the NY 1 story. Thanks especially to the many parent and community leaders who testified about the devastating impact of school overcrowding on their children.

Please also read the Gotham Gazette article I co-authored with Javier Valdez of Make the Road NY on the need for fundamental reforms to the school planning and siting process.

You can write a letter to the Mayor and the Speaker urging them to create a Commission to develop reforms by clicking here. You can download a flyer about our letter campaign to post in your schools here.

Finally, I’m speaking tomorrow, Thursday night at 6 PM at a CEC 28 monthly meeting about class size and overcrowding at: 90-27 Sutphin Boulevard Queens, 2nd floor; and Saturday at an education forum starting at 1 PM in Jackson Heights at the United Methodist Church at 81-10 35th Ave. Please join us if you can.

Thanks,

Leonie Haimson
