Update and reminder on Chancellor Rosa forum, and hypocrisy from the NY Post on preK and charter schools

May 2, 2016

Dear Friend,

Welcome back from spring break!

1. Reminder: this Friday, May 6 at 6 PM, the new NY Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa will be speaking about her vision to transform education in NYC and throughout the state, with investigative report Juan González moderating. This event is co-sponsored by CEC6, CB12M Youth and Education Committee and Class Size Matters.

What: Education forum with Chancellor Betty Rosa and Juan González

Where: George Washington Educational Campus auditorium, 549 Audubon Ave. (192 St.)

When: Friday May 6, 2016 at 6:00pm

Members of the audience will have the opportunity to ask questions and translation will be available.

Dr. Rosa is an outspoken advocate for smaller classes and an opponent of high-stakes standardized testing. At her first press conference as Chancellor, she said she would have opted her own children out of the state exams if they had still been enrolled in the public schools. Juan González is an award-winning investigative reporter and always asks the most piercing questions.

A flyer you can post and distribute in your school is here; another version of the flyer in English and Spanish is here.

2. Check out the letter I sent to the editors of the NY Post about their hypocrisy, in having the gall to criticize the DOE for awarding preK contracts to programs without proper adequate vetting, and yet claiming that Success charter school should get taxpayer preK funds without signing a contract or any city oversight — even as Success was just hit with yet another lawsuit for abusing young students and violating their rights.

3. Save the date for our June 9 Skinny dinner — location and awardee to be announced soon.

Thanks,

Leonie Haimson
